The Ricky Gervais Podcast...Obviously
The Ricky Gervais Show is a British audio show that started in November 2001 on Xfm. In November 2005, Guardian Unlimited offered the show as a podcast. According to Emily Bell, editor-in-chief of Guardian Unlimited, they switched from radio to podcast in order to have greater control over the content and provide access to a larger audience. It ran as a series of 12 shows. There were two more subsequent series released in 2006. Later, three more podcasts, titled "The Podfather Trilogy", were released as a fourth season of the show. In 2007, two full-length podcasts were released. The fifth season, released as audiobooks, came out in September 2008 with four chapters. All these podcasts and audiobooks starred Gervais, Stephen Merchant, and Karl Pilkington. The podcast has been ranked the most downloaded podcast in the world.
Ricky Gervais is a famous English comedian, actor, director, producer, writer, and musician. He is most known for his British television series The Office, which he co-wrote, co-directed, and played the lead role of David Brent. Since that series, he has also gained popularity in another series Extras, which he also co-wrote, co-directed, and played the role of Andy Millman. For both of those shows, he worked with friend and collaborator Stephen Merchant. He has starred in Hollywood movies, including Ghost Town and The Invention of Lying. He has also performed in sell-out comedy tours, written a book series Flanimals, and starred in the popular podcast, The Ricky Gervais Show.
Content of the Podcasts
The first season of the show revolved much around Karl Pilkington. He provided a witty radio personality with strange theories, and features of the show included him answering fan emails and questions from Gervais and Merchant. On the show, his character was "unemployed", having left his job at Xfm as a radio producer.
In the second series, Karl's Diary and Rockbusters were often featured, consisting of Karl's humorous thoughts and experiences, as well as Karl trying to use clues to figure out a clever play on words. The third series focused more on conversation of the three comedians. Karl's Diary was still a recurring feature. Karl's Poetry was also a newly implemented feature in the show.
Season four, "The Podfather", was released in three sections to coincide with Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Four more episodes, which made up season five, were released through iTunes Music Store as an audiobook, split into half-hour episodes.
Starting in March 2006, free video podcasts became available through iTunes on an irregular basis. These video podcasts did not follow the format of the previous show, and varied greatly in content. These still starred the three comedians Gervais, Merchant, and Pilkington, featuring their random conversations and experiences. There has been a total of 12 episodes.
There has also been a more recent audio podcast series called The Ricky Gervais Guide to... These included several volumes, such as The Ricky Gervais Guide to Medicine, The Ricky Gervais Guide to Natural History, The Ricky Gervais Guide to The Arts, The Ricky Gervais Guide to Philosophy, and The Gervais Guide to The English. This series started being released in December 2008 and has had several more volumes released in a second season, that totals 10 episodes.
