Lagos Highlife CD 10

2011-05-29 Length: 1h 13m 26s

This Lagos highlife episode number 10 is dedicated to my mother; Yemi who recently celebrated her 72nd birthday last Sunday. A graduate of Mass Communication from University of Lagos, she was a pioneer female journalist at the Tribune newspaper in Ibadan, where she was known as Aunty Yemi, reporting on various women health, equal rights, post independent politics, relationship and news for several years. She later worked at Nigeria Broadcasting Corporation as a public relations executive in Lagos.

This podcast and my love of music is a direct result of my childhood exposure to radio and highlife music by my parents. Thank you very much for your love and may you remain blessed with good health, happiness and long life.

As always, some of the legendaries are highlighted in this issue. Kingsley Bassey's Ima Abasi is a perfect introduction at any Lagos, Ibadan, Enugu, Warri or Benin venue on a Friday or Saturday evening. If Stephen Osita Osadebe’s Amala is not enough to make you dance, wait until Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey and Cardinal Rex Lawson steps into the scene.

No place like home – I am back in the mix of things in California, after a memorable tour of Nigeria. Special thanks to everyone involved in making my stay a joyful one. I had way too much amala, ewedu, egusi, fufu and pounded yam during my stay and I am definitely coming back home for more soon.

This is yet another great episode in our continuous journey through the works of the legendary highlife masters from West Africa.  Oliver de Coque’s track “Appreciation” is a special dedication to all Worldbeat podcast fans around the globe.
